3 Questions to Consider Asking your Mediator
Finding and selecting a mediator who feels right can make all the difference. Just as with any professional, finding the right one can take time, and often asking the right questions from the get-go can illuminate fit. Our intuition can be invaluable, but we have put together a list of questions you may want to consider when selecting your family or divorce mediator.
What is your experience with our particular mediation? Has your mediator mediated this type of dispute before? For instance, are they familiar with different parenting time splits? What about property division? Whatever you are hoping to spend time discussing in mediation, it might be helpful to know their experience in these areas.
When will we be able to mediate? It may sound simple, yes, but knowing your mediator’s schedule is important. Your desired timeline and their availability may either work beautifully or make scheduling a challenge. Additionally, finding out if your mediator can meet more than once a week (if this is what you are hoping for) might help you determine a realistic timeline for your mediation goals.
What is their approach to facilitating the mediation? Not all mediators facilitate their mediations the same. Are you seeking a mediator who is more involved? Maybe this mediator presents possible topics for discussion that might be relevant to your situation, or perhaps you are both seeking a mediator who is more hands-off and more of a third-party presence in the room? Whatever you are both hoping for in a mediator, become clear on your desires and communicate them to your prospective mediator. You might consider asking them how they mediate and discuss whether their approach aligns with your vision for the mediation.
